What is Dysport®?

Dysport® made by Medicis, is a prescription injection treatment for wrinkles made from the same neurotoxin (botulinum toxin type A) as BOTOX®. Like BOTOX®, Dysport® was originally developed in the 90s to treat neuromuscular disorders. Dysport® was FDA approved for use as a
wrinkle treatment May 1, 2009.

What is the difference between BOTOX® and Dysport®?

Overall BOTOX® and Dysport® are very similar. Both are a type of botulinum type A used to relax the muscles that cause frown lines and other overactive muscles of the face, like forehead lines and crow’s feet. The Dysport® protein is slightly smaller. Because Dysport® is a smaller-sized molecule its unit measurement is different than BOTOX®.

How does Dysport® work?

Dysport® is injected directly into the facial muscles that cause wrinkles, temporarily immobilizing them. Dysport® diffuses farther from the injection point than BOTOX®: one to three centimeters compared to Botox’s one centimeter. This means that fewer injections are needed for a smooth result.

When will I see results from Dysport®?

Dysport® seems to have a quicker onset then BOTOX® (1-2 days vs. 3-4 days for BOTOX®). Although results of Dysport® are generally noticeable in 1-2 days it can take up to 14 days to have full effect.

How long does Dysport® last?

Like BOTOX®, Dysport® on average lasts 3-4 months, and may last longer in certain individuals. If you are pleased with your Dysport® treatment you may want to consider a regular treatment schedule. We recommend consistent re-treatment to maintain the maximum desired effect.

Is treatment with Dysport® painful?

Dysport® is injected using a very fine needle. The discomfort is minimal and the edge can be taken off with an ice compress just prior to injection. The entire procedure takes approximately 10-20 minutes and no recovery time is necessary.

Important Safety Information

Bruising may occur. Avoid medications (Aspirin, Advil) for 1 week prior to treatment to minimize bruising risk. Dysport® should not be used in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not have Dysport® treatment if you: are allergic to Dysport® or any of its ingredients, are allergic to cow’s milk protein, had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product, such as Myobloc®(rimabotulinumtoxinB), BOTOX® (onabotulinumtoxinA), or Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA), or have a skin infection at the planned injection site.
